Online Language Learning with Memrise

Memrise online language learningBonjour! Ciao! Hola! Is learning a new language or brushing up on some rusty foreign vocabulary on your bucket list? Voilà! Memrise is here to offer you a fun, level-by-level way to memorize and remember words of a foreign tongue with their online language learning app.

Memory-Based Online Language Learning

Memrise isn’t just boring memorization, but its repetitive approach does allow you to store new vocabulary in short term memory, which, with review, gets recorded in long term memory. A little flower icon sprouts and grows as you review each term, showing you how far each word or phrase has been lodged in your mind.

To begin, visit Memrise.com or download the app (available for iOS and Android). Then create a Memrise account, or log in with your Google account or Facebook. Select your language, choose your level, and dive into your first vocabulary lesson! Each session includes about five to seven new words or phrases taught through interactive visual text, audio soundbites, and video clips. Video clips show a native speaker saying the phrase, and audio soundbites often include both a male and female voice recording so you can listen for slightly different tones and pronunciations.

Making Progress with Memrise

As you progress through the lessons, you may hear terms from a previous unit pop up again, just to make sure you maintain what you’ve already “memrised.” After you’ve learned new terms and completed a level, you have the option to review past words or tackle new vocabulary. Points awarded at the end of each lesson give the app a fun game-like feel, and the 5 to 10-minute lessons make it easy to fit in a learning session between other tasks. You can set daily goals to keep your online language learning consistent.

Learn Beyond Language

Language not your thing? Memrise also offers lessons in other subjects, such as Arts & Literature, Math & Science, Professional & Careers, and more! Some of the content is user-generated, meaning the site won’t be at the level of free university-hosted online classes, but it’s still a great option for a fun, casual introduction to new topics.
